Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday said that they had arrested three individuals after a video of a woman’s molestation and alleged gang-rape in Unnao forest went viral on social media.

Speaking to reporters, Unnao SP Harish Kumar said that the cops had taken cognisance of the video as soon as it was brought to their attention. “As soon as we were informed about the video, the local police station in-charge registered a case on his own. The case was registered under Sections IPC 382/18, 147, 323, 504, 506 and 354. There were six people involved in assaulting the woman and filming the act. We’ve arrested three of them. They are Akash, Rahul and Vimal. Akash had spent time in jail for theft in the past.”

A manhunt has started to arrest the other accused, Vipin and Hrithik, said Kumar.

In the viral video, which is too disturbing to watch, a woman is seen being dragged inside a forest by three men. The man filing the sexual assault is heard threatening to make the video viral by giving it to TV channels even as the victim beg for mercy. But her desperate pleas have no effect on her tormentors.

The woman later said that she was gang-raped by four men, who sexually assaulted her one by one. The victim was on her way to buy medicine when the six men attacked her.

Unnao was last in news after BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was accused of raping an 18-year-old girl. The girl’s father was allegedly tortured by local police inside police station after he staged a protest outside the residence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath with his family.

The father of the victim had later succumbed to his injuries after being assaulted in police custody, raising questions on the near-collapsed law and order in the state under Yogi Adityanath government.
