A video currently viral on social media is being circulated with the claim that it depicts a fountain in Thailand which magically springs water when somebody chants the Hindu mantra ‘ॐ’ (Om).  In the clip, a woman can be heard screaming into a mic and water shoots up from the valley in front of her.

Thailand’s Flowing Rivulet (small river) Rises above as Natural Fountain on reciting Sound Of The Universe ‘Om’*ओम् (ॐ)*!!!!

Thailand’s Flowing Rivulet (small river) Rises above as Natural Fountain on reciting Sound Of The Universe ‘Om’*

The video is being shared with the caption – “थाइलैंड में एक पर्वत के नीचे पानी का एक छोटा जरंना (small natural river) के बाजु वाले पर्वत पे *ओम् (ॐ)* का उच्चारण करते पानी फ़ूवाँरा बन कर पर्वत से भी अपर तक उछलता है…. A stream flows below a mountain in Thailand. If you pronounce ‘Om’ at the adjacent mountain, the water shoots up even higher than the height of the mountain itself. A community of saints has built this fountain. We don’t understand how this happens. How can the water defy its own weight and gravity and reach such heights just because of someone’s voice? Only a theologist can explain this. We are curious to know how this happens because it’s possible only when you say ‘Om’. It’s a miracle.”

The woman does not shout “Om”

If one carefully listens to the viral video, the woman does not shout “Om” but actually says “Aaa”. This suggests that social media claims about the spring being stimulated with the mystical word are dubious.

Not a magical spring, it’s a voice-stimulated fountain

The fountain does not magically shoot up water when someone says “Om”. It is, in fact, a voice-activated spring. Ergo, the louder you shout, the higher the water goes, irrespective of what you scream.

Alt News found the original video on a Chinese video streaming website Tencent Video (v.qq.com). From what it seems, the fountain is not in Thailand, but China. A Google translation of the description of the video says – “Shouting the subtlety of the spring, how high you want the spring water, it depends on your lung capacity!”

A fact-check by India Today found a video posted by a Chinese news channel New China TV which claimed that the fountain is located in Cangshan Mountain, north China’s Shanxi Province. The start of the video does seem similar to the viral video. However, the later parts of the video show a different location with another voice-activated fountain. Alt News could not independently confirm its exact location.

We found a few YouTube videos showcasing the same technology. In the video posted below, the man can be heard screaming “Aaa” and water shoots up from the spring in front of him.

In fact, such a kind of voice-controlled fountain is also available for purchase online. A Chinese e-commerce website ChinaHao.com is selling the device for US$106.98.

False claim viral on social media

That the spring shoots up water upon the chants of ‘Om’ is viral on social media.

The false claim is also being shared on WhatsApp.
