Liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya has reportedly lost his High Court appeal in the UK against his extradition order to India, reported news agency PTI.

Lord Justice Stephen Irwin and Justice Elisabeth Laing, the two-member bench at the Royal Courts of Justice in London presiding over the appeal, dismissed the appeal in a judgment handed down remotely due to the current coronavirus lockdown.

[Read: Full coverage on Vijay Mallya’s extradition]

“We consider that while the scope of the prima facie case found by the SDJ [Senior District Judge] is in some respects wider than that alleged by the Respondent in India [Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED)], there is a prima facie case which, in seven important respects, coincides with the allegations in India,” the judges were quoted by PTI.

Mallya is facing charges of defrauding Indian banks to the tune of Rs 9,000 crore. The trouble for him started after his Kingfisher Airlines went bankrupt. The Scotland Yard had executed an extradition warrant against him in April 2017, but the billionaire businessman was on bail since then.

In February this year, the then UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid had given his approval to the extradition of Mallya to India. This had come days after the 63-year-old businessman lost a legal challenge against his extradition in a British court in December last year.

Tina Ambani has written a heartfelt note to wish Mukesh Ambani, the elder brother of her husband Anil Ambani, on his 63rd birthday. The adorable note by Tina for Mukesh Ambani came days after her emotional message for Akash Ambani and Shloka Mehta on the couple’s first wedding anniversary went viral.

Tina Ambani

Tina wrote, “Happy birthday to warm, sensitive, caring Mukesh. Wish you every happiness, today and always!” The note by Tina prompted her fans to also wish India’s richest businessman on his birthday. One wrote, “Such a wonderful picture, Happiest birthday to you, sir” Another commented, “The biggest business tycoon and a inspiration for me who gave education to a lot of children and won everyone heart by his soft behaviour many many many many many happy returns of the day sir.”

Last month, Tina had penned a heartfelt note for Akash and Shloka on the occasion of their first wedding anniversary. “To a beautiful couple who are always in sync, perfectly matched, and brimming with love. Happy anniversary Akash and Shloka, stay blessed always,” Tina had written while also tagging Akash on Instagram.

Tina’s husband Anil Ambani has stayed away from social media platforms. Tina, for her part, has been fairly active on Instagram, where she has over 20,000 followers. Earlier this month, she wished Mukesh Ambani’s son Anant on his birthday when she wrote, “Blessings to a warm, wonderful, large-hearted young man. Truly admire your love for animals and your generosity towards people! Happy birthday Hari Anant.”

In March, Tina also took to Instagram to greet Mukesh and his wife Nita Ambani on their wedding anniversary. She wrote, “Happy anniversary to a couple who always bring out the best in each other! Wish you love and happiness always.”

In February this year, she shared an adorable photo of herself with her mother-in-law Kokilaben to wish her on her birthday. She had written, “Mummy, you are an inspiration for us all, each and every day, in myriad ways. Thank you for being who you are. Happy birthday!”

A video where a few policemen are seen picking up notes with sticks from a roadside and placing them inside a bag is doing the rounds on social media. It is being claimed that a member of the Muslim community had thrown Rs 100, Rs 200 and Rs 500 notes to spread coronavirus.

Twitter handle @SortedEagle posted this video with the message, “They’ve found a new way to spread the virus now. A resident of this area in Indore saw a Muslim chap scatter currency notes of 100, 200 & 500 in the locality for people to pick up & get infected. Police was called & they collected them with protection. 10 grand scattered around.” It has been retweeted more than 1,200 times so far.

This video has also been shared on Facebook with a similar narrative. It is also getting shared with a message in Tamil. The message claims that Muslims in West Bengal are throwing notes on road to spread the virus.

The video has been shared with a message in Hindi as well. However, the Hindi text doesn’t give any communal angle to the incident. Alt News has received several requests on its Android application to fact-check this video.

Fact-check

With a Google search, Alt News found a report published by Dainik Jagran on April 17, 2020. According to the report, the incident took place at Indore’s Khatipura-Gori Nagar road on Thursday. People informed the police after seeing some notes scattered on the road after which they sanitised the notes and ceased them. Furthermore, the police went through the footage of near-by CCTV camera but they couldn’t find a suspected vehicle or a person. The report nowhere identified the person suspected of having thrown the notes as a Muslim.

We then reached out to Hira Nagar police station regarding this matter. In conversation with Alt News, station in-charge Rajiv Bhaduria said, “It is clear that any person or a Muslim didn’t deliberate scatter the notes. Actually, the notes fell from the pocket of an Indane gas delivery guy. The person’s name is Narendra Yadav and he is a resident of Indore’s Gauri Nagar. Yadav had come to us to know about the notes. After listening to his story, we checked the CCTV footage and it became clear that these were his notes.”

Thus, it is certain that these notes in Khatipura area of Indore were not deliberately thrown on the roadside by a member of the Muslim community to spread the coronavirus. A similar incident took place in Delhi with a man who had borrowed money from an ATM. A video of that incident was also shared with an anti-Muslim angle on social media.

Note: The number of positive cases of the novel coronavirus in India exceeds 17,000 and over to 500 deaths have so far been reported. The government has imposed a complete restriction on movement apart from essential services to tackle the pandemic. Globally, more than 24 lakh confirmed cases and close to 1.6 lakh deaths have been reported. There is a sense of panic among citizens, causing them to fall for a variety of online misinformation – misleading images and videos rousing fear or medical misinformation promoting pseudoscience and invalid treatments. While your intentions may be pure, misinformation, spread especially during a pandemic, can take lives. We request our readers to practice caution and not forward unverified messages on WhatsApp and other social media platforms.

The advertisement by Valentis Cancer Hospital adds that in case of emergency, the patient and their attendants will be admitted but they will be tested for Covid-19 immediately. The cost for the test i.e., Rs 4,500 each will be taken from the patient. The reasons cited by the hospital included the alleged misbehaviour of the members of the ”Tablighi Jamaat” (TJ), who, the ad said, had contributed to the spread of coronavirus infection in the country.

The Uttar Pradesh Police has filed an FIR against the owner of Valentis Hospital over the matter.

Speaking to IANS, Meerut SSP Ajay Kumar Sahni said: “We have filed a case against the hospital for this inappropriate and communal advertisement and investigation is underway.”

The quarter-page advertisement in a famous Hindi daily published on April 17 also described the Jain community as :miserly” and appealed to them to contribute to the PM-CARES Fund. However, a day later, the hospital issued another advertisement in the same paper where it regretted if the first advertisement hurt the feelings of any community.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Sunday urged India to take “urgent steps” to protect the rights of its minority Muslim community and stop the incidents of “Islamophobia” in the country.

The OIC’s Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission in a tweet also said the Indian media was negatively profiling the Muslims and subjecting them to discrimination.

“OIC-IPHRC urges the #Indian Govt to take urgent steps to stop the growing tide of #Islamophobia in India and protect the rights of its” Muslim minority, it tweeted.

In an earlier tweet, the OIC-UPHRC condemned the “unrelenting vicious #Islamophobic campaign in #India maligning Muslims for spread of #COVID-19 as well as their negative profiling in media subjecting them to discrimination & violence with impunity.”

There was no immediate reaction from the Ministry of External Affairs.

India has previously hit out at the 57-member grouping of Muslim majority nations, saying bodies like OIC should not make irresponsible statements.
Earlier this week, MEA spokesperson Anurag Srivastava slammed the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) for adding “religious colour to our national goal of fighting the COVID 19 pandemic”, after the commission commented on a report that patients in a hospital in Ahmedabad were being segregated on the basis of their religion.

The USCIRF had said that they were “concerned with reports of Hindu & Muslim patients separated into separate hospital wards in #Gujarat. Such actions only help to further increase ongoing stigmatization of Muslims in #India and exacerbate false rumors of Muslims spreading COVID-19”. PTI
