The deaths of three sisters under mysterious circumstances in east Delhi’s Mandawali area have stunned everyone including the government stunned. According to some reports, the autopsies have confirmed that the three sisters, aged two, four and eight, may have died died of hunger.
A stunned Delhi government on Wednesday ordered a probe as Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia took to Twitter to say that that the children’s father was a daily wage worker and mother suffered from mental illness.
“I shall go to the house in Mandavali tomorrow morning where this incident took place,” he wrote.
They were brought to hospital by their mother and a neighbour at around 1 pm, and the hospital authorities informed police about their deaths, reported PTI.
Pankaj Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (east), said that a board of doctors would conduct a re-examination of the bodies at the GTB hospital. The Cops said that a forensic team inspected the place where the family was staying and found some medicine bottles and pills. The girls’ father, who worked as a casual labourer, is missing since yesterday.

The news has evoked strong reactions from journalists on social media. Journalist Shahid Siddiqui wrote, “Before you have your next meal also think of these kids who died due to starvation and thousands of others who sleep hungry most of the nights. Hunger is the biggest disease we still face 3 kids die of starvation in Delhi.” One user wrote, “12kms away from the Indian Parliament, three little girls die of hunger caused by extreme poverty. When will the statues of Shivaji, Patel and Ram get built so that things like this don’t happen in India. Also waiting for bullet train to solve this problem.”
No injury marks were found on the bodies, they said, adding that the re-examination would help ascertain whether they were poisoned.
In a similar incident, an 11-year-old girl had died of starvation in Jharkhand last year. The girl’s mother had said that the family could not procure grains because their ration cards were not linked to Aadhar.
