Hours after the Centre’s Narendra Modi government announced it had made GST free, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar said that the decision had brought tears in his eyes.

Taking to Twitter, Akshay wrote, “One of those days when a news brings tears of joy as a cause close to your heart gets fulfilled. Thank you, #GSTCouncil, for understanding the need for menstrual hygiene & exempting sanitary pads from tax. I’m sure crores of women in our country are silently sending gratitude your way.”

One of those days when a news brings tears of joy as a cause close to ur heart gets fulfilled.Thank you, #GSTCouncil, for understanding the need for menstrual hygiene & exempting sanitary pads from tax. I’m sure crores of women in our country are silently sending gratitude ur way

Earlier this year, Akshay had starred in his home productions film Pad Man, which narrated the story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, who introduced the low-cost sanitary napkins. Pad Man was produced by Twinkle Khanna and directed by R Balki. It featured Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor along with Akshay.

Other than sanitary napkins, rakhi too has been made GST free. Finance Minister Piyush Goyal also told reporters after chairing the GST Council meeting on Saturday that new changes will come into effect from 27 July.

Among items on which GST was reduced include footwear, small televisions, water heater, electric ironing machines, refrigerators, lithium ion batteries, hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, food appliances and ethanol.

“GST Council cuts tax rate on an array of products. Rakhis have been exempted from GST, tax on ethanol has been cut to 5 per cent, small handicrafts have been exempted,” Goyal said.

The next GST Council meeting will be held on August 4.

Among other changes, small businesses with sales of up to Rs 5 crores has been allowed to file tax returns on a quarterly basis but they will have to pay GST tax monthly. This, a report by Hindustan Times, said was in addition to the composition scheme, which allows small tax payers with sales of upto Rs 1 crore in most of the states, to pay taxes and file returns on a quarterly basis. In states like Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Uttarakhand, the threshold for businesses to take GST registration has been raised to Rs. 20 lakh from Rs. 10 lakh.

Experts believe that the maximum 28% tax may be on its way out and the government may only choose to levy the maximum tax on ‘sin and luxury’ items such as tobacco etc in the interim.
