Legendary poet and lyricist Gopal Das Neeraj passed away at the age of 93 in Aligarh on Thursday. From prime minister to the president of India, the news left everyone saddened.
Neeraj was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2007.

Neeraj penned this heart-wrenching song for Gambler that has gone into the musical history. The language and words were so powerful that the song remains popular on sad occasions more than 40 years after it was written.
In 1970, Neeraj wrote Kehta Hai Joker for Raj Kapoor’s classic Mera Naam Joker. You wouldn’t have known that it was legendary Neeraj, who wrote this popular song.
Neeraj wrote powerful Kaarwan guzar gaya, ghubaar dekhte rahe for Nayi Umr ki Nayi Fasal. The film did not do wait but the song became legendary. His son in this film was what had impressed Dev Anand, who signed him for Gambler.
Ab to Mazhab koi aisa bhi chalaaya jaaye, jismein insan ko insan banaya jaaye. This was so apt for today’s politics.
His song Ye Mera Prem Patra Padh Kar from film Sagam became another all-time classic. His love for simple Hindustani words as opposed to hard Urdu as was the case in the past made him composition unique.
