Among those welcoming the Thursday’s verdict by the five-judge constitutional bench of the Supreme Court decriminalising gay sex in India were Bollywood stars. Leading the pack was filmmaker Karan Johar, who said that the top court’s historic verdict had allowed India to get ‘its oxygen back.’
He tweeted, “Historical judgment!!!! So proud today! Decriminalising homosexuality and abolishing #Section377 is a huge thumbs up for humanity and equal rights! The country gets its oxygen back!.”
Joining him were actors like Abhishek Bhachchan, Arjun Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar, Sonam Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and many others. Arjun, for his part wrote, “Sanity prevails for once we can believe we have some sensible decision makers and lawmaker s available to this generation. #Section377 gone with the wind.”
Abhishek posted a rainbow coloured map of India to express his approval to the Thursday’s judgement, which left Sona crying. She wrote, “Crying tears of joy for the lgbtqi community. One day there won’t be any labels and we will all live in utopia.”
Varun’s tweet read, “A law implemented in 1860 is now abolished. A day for our entire nation to live with pride. Bye bye #sec377 #lovealllovefree #historic.”
A tweet by Swara read, “Congratulations to all the activists and petitioners on #SupremeCourt judgement scrapping #Section377 Your perseverance just made #India a freer place for everyone ! #LoveIsLove #Pride #377Verdict #377Scrapped Three cheers for the #SupremeCourt.”
Actress Dia Mirza too posted a rainbow emoji and wrote, “Equality for India!!! Equal love. Equal rights. ❤️🌈 #RIPSection377 #Pride #LoveIsLove.”
Earlier on Thursday, the five-judge constitution bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice Indu Malhotra had delivered a historic judgement in favour of repealing of the British-era Section 377 banning gay sex.
The top court delivering separate but concurring judgments, said it is the constitutional and not social morality which will prevail. The verdict sparked celebrations amongst the LGBTIQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/transsexual, intersex and queer/questioning) community across India.
Chief Justice Dipak Misra, also speaking for Justice A.M. Khanwilkar, said attitude and mentality has to change to accept the others’ identity and accept what they are and not what they should be.
