In a second episode of a bridge collapse in Kolkata in three years, one person was left dead as a portion of famous Majerhat flyover collapsed on Tuesday.
Many were feared to be trapped inside the debris even as army personnel and local residents fought desperately to save as many lives as possible. So far, the combined efforts of the rescue team have saved 24 lives.
Only two years ago, in a similar incident, the collapse of a flyover in Kolkata had killed 26 people.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is on a visit to Darjeeling said rescue, not fixing responsibility, was the need of the hour. She said that due to unavailability of flights, she was not able to return to Kolkata.
Tweets posted by her party’s official Twitter handle read, “We are very worried. We are receiving information from the rescue team on ground. We want to go back as soon as possible. There are no flights in the evening, we are unable to do so. Our team is focused on relief and rescue work. Our priority is relief and rescue. Rest of the investigation will be done later.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the accident. His tweet read, “The collapse of a part of a bridge in Kolkata is deeply unfortunate. My thoughts are with the families of the victims. I pray that those who are injured recover at the earliest.”

The last time Kolkata’s flyover had collapsed just before the crucial assembly polls, Modi’s comments terming the accident as god’s message to save Bengal from Trinamool had turned into a huge controversy. He was widely condemned for his insensitive statement in a bid to derive electoral gains.
