Police were alerted about the contet of the chat as Sitharaman arrived in Dharchula town in Uttarakhand on Monday. According to reports, the two persons were allegedly drunk when they posted the messages about their plans to kill Sitharaman.

A report by PTI said that the controversial message sent by one of the arrested duo read, “Main shoot karunga Sitharaman ko, kal uska akhiri din hoga(I will shoot Sitharaman, tomorrow will be her last day).”

The cops were informed about the WhatsApp chat on Sunday night at 9.30 pm. Pithoragarh SP Ramchandra Rajguru said that the two individuals had been booked under section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 66 of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

“We were alerted to the chat (about killing the defence minister) on a WhatsApp group at 9.30 pm on Sunday. We identified two persons between whom the chat was taking place and arrested them Monday morning ahead of the defence minister’s arrival here,” he was quoted by the news agency.

The cops are also investigating the role of the group admin even as they probe the criminal background of the arrested persons. They are also trying to find out if they indeed possessed any arms and ammunition.

According to the SP, even though they had to investigate the matter with utmost seriousness, this appeared to look like a case of two drunk individuals chatting on WhatsApp without realising the severity of their content.
