A number of users of the fresh new iPhones are reporting a serious problem related to charging when the screen is turned off. Many users have reported charging issues with their iPhone XS and XS Max devices and shared their experiences on the MacRumors forums and Apple’s support forums.
When the Lightning cable is plugged in, some units of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max refuse to start charging unless the screen is woken up. However, the problem appears to escalate when in some units, even after tapping the screen up does not initiate charging.
Popular YouTuber Lewis Hilsenteger who runs the channel Unbox Therapy demonstrated the issue with multiple units of the new iPhones compared against the one-generation older iPhone X. He showed a number of iPhones in his videos and while all others appear to charge, the iPhone XS Max did not charge, even when plugged into the official Apple charger.
Users of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max have taken to the official forum to reveal the problem. It is speculated that the problem could be due to the introduction of the USB Restricted Mode in iOS 11.4.1 which restricts accessory support in the prolonged locked state.
Apple is yet to respond on this charging issue.
