Officials in Indonesia said on Tuesday that the number of people killed in Indonesia quake and tsunami had risen to more than 1,200.
Authorities fear that the official death toll could be in thousands. Among those killed are also 34 Indonesian students whose bodies were found under a church buried by a mudslide.
There are fears that some survivors may still be trapped under the rubble of that and other buildings.
The last week’s natural calamity has caused widespread damage in Indonesia with people growing increasingly desperate for aid. A report by BBC said on Tuesday that supplies of water, food and fuel were scarce and with roads damaged it was proving hard to bring more in, or reach the more remote areas. particularly in Palu.
“The government, the president have come here, but what we really need is food and water,” said Burhanuddin Aid Masse, 48, was quoted by Sky News..
Signs along roads read “We Need Food” and “We Need Support”, and long lines have formed to get a share of remaining petrol supplies.
Meanwhile, CNN reported that dozens of bodies lined the streets of Palu – a city of more than 350,000 people – over the weekend. The report further added that authorities had started to bury many of them in mass graves to prevent the spread of disease.
An estimated 2.4 million people have been affected by the disaster, according to Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. About 600 were badly injured, he said, and at least 48,000 people have been displaced.
Four more earthquakes between 5.0 and 6.0 magnitude hit Indonesia late on Monday night, London’s Sky News reported quoting the US Geological Survey. It added that the tremors were recorded near Sumba island – hundreds of miles south of Sulawesi, where Friday’s quake struck.
There are no details so far on any damage or casualties.
