In a tragic incident, as many as 18 school children in Surat in Gujarat were killed after a huge fire fire broke out at the coaching centre that they were studying at. The fire broke out at Takshashila complex the Friday afternoon.

19 fire tenders and two hydraulic platforms were rushed to the spot to extinguish the fire. Eye witnesses said that they saw several students jumping off the building to save their lives. Some of the injured students are believed to be in critical condition.

Reacting to the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Extremely anguished by the fire tragedy in Surat. My thoughts are with bereaved families. May the injured recover quickly. Have asked the Gujarat Government and local authorities to provide all possible assistance to those affected.”



Congress President Rahul Gandhi wrote on Twitter, “I’m deeply hurt by the news of fire in Surat. I express my deep sorrow to the affected families. I am also praying for the speedy recovery of those injured.”



According to local media reports, the fire broke out at the top two floors of the complex at around 3.30 pm in Sarthana area of Surat.

The state government of Gujarat has announced a help of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of those killed. The government has also ordered a probe.
