According to those travelling in the Boeing 737 chartered aircraft, the plane had to make a heaving landing amidst a thunderstorm. The plane was being operated by Miami Air International and flown from Guantanamo Bay in Cuba to a military base in the city of Jacksonville, reported BBC.

Soon after the plane landed, it skidded off the runway into the nearby St John’s River.

One passenger Cheryl Bormann told the CNN, “The plane literally hit the ground and bounced – it was clear the pilot did not have total control of the plane, it bounced again.”

“We were in the water. We couldn’t tell where we were, whether it was a river or an ocean,” she said, adding that she could smell jet fuel leaking into the river.

Florida’s Sheriff office tweeted, “#JSO Marine Unit was called to assist @NASJax_ in reference to a commercial airplane in shallow water. The plane was not submerged. Every person is alive and accounted for.”

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry said in a tweet that he had been briefed that ‘all lives have been accounted for.’
