Jaganmohan Reddy of the YSR Congress on Sunday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and invited him to attend his swearing-in ceremony as the new Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister. Jagan’s party won 22 out of 25 Lok Sabha seats in the state and 151 of the 175 seats in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly.

Jagan, as he is popularly known as, presented a bouquet and a shawl as he greeted the prime minister with his other colleagues. Modi also welcomed him with a hug. Jagan is believed to have asked for a special status for Andhra Pradesh besides inviting him to be his guest when he takes oath of office as the state’s chief minister.

Modi took to Twitter to share photos of his meeting Jagan. He wrote, “Had an excellent meeting with Andhra Pradesh’s CM designate @ysjagan. We had a fruitful interaction on several issues pertaining to AP’s development. Assured him all possible support from the Centre during his term.”

Jagan has widely been credited with carving a niche for himself after the Congress prevented him from succeeding his father, late YS Rajasekhara Reddy, a very popular Congress chief minister of undivided Andhra before he died in a helicopter crash in 2009. Jagan was later harassed by the CBI and other probe agencies as he formed his separate party, YSR Congress. He was also arrested and had to spend 16 months in jail after CBI alleged that private firms and individuals invested in his companies as a quid pro quo for government favours when his father was Andhra Pradesh chief minister.

This year, he embarked on 3648-km padyatra to highlight the failure in governance of the then Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu.
