Punjab Congress President Sunil Jakhar on Monday resigned from from his post days after losing to Sunny Deol from Gurdaspur parliamentary seat. Despite Gurdaspur being held by Jakhar, the defeat to actor-turned-politician had come as a huge blow to the Congress in the state.

Only a few months ago, Jakhar had won this seat by a margin of nearly two lakh votes. However, on 23 May, his relatively inexperienced rival politician defeated him little over 80,000 votes.

In his resignation letter, Jakhar said that he could not retain his seat despite receiving  support from Congress President Rahul Gandhi, AICC General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.

“Everyone supported me fully and put in their best for me but I was unable to defend my seat. In such a scenario I cannot continue as state chief. I feet a moral responsibility to quit,” Outlook website quoted him as saying.

When asked about the controversy surrounding Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, Jakhar said, “As I said I have myself put in my papers.”

Earlier Congress state chief of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Odisha had resigned in the wake of poor performances by the party in their states.

In the just concluded Lok Sabha polls in Punjab, the Congress won 8 out of 13 seats, while the BJP and the Akali Dal won two each. The Aam Aadmi Party, which had won four seats in the 2014 polls, could only win one seat.
