Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has controversially addressed BJP MP Manoj Tiwari as naachne waala (someone who earns his living by dancing). Addressing an election rally in Delhi in favour of his party’s candidate Dilip Pandey in North East Delhi on Friday, Kejriwal urged voters to not vote for a naachne waala.

He said, “Manoj Tiwari naachta bahaut acha hai, Pandey ji  (Dilip Pandey) ko naachna nahi aata, kaam karna aata hai, is baar kaam karne wale ko vote dena, naachne waale ko vote mat dena. (Manoj Tiwari dances very well. Pandey ji can’t dance. This time you must vote for a doer and not a dancer.”

The video of Kejriwal mocking Tiwari’s entertainment background evoked angry reactions on social media after journalist Prashant Kumar shared the video on Twitter.

Reacting to Kejriwal’s remarks, Tiwari said that the Delhi Chief Minister had insulted the people of purvanchal (eastern UP bordering Bihar). He told news agency ANI, “By abusing me he has directly insulted people of ‘purvanchal’ and the same people will now show him what are the consequences of it.”

Delhi’s North East seat has considerably high number of voters from India’s Purvanchal  region. Tiwari, a famous bhojpuri actor and singer, is hugely popular among them.

Earlier Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan had called his rival and Bollywood actress Jaya Prada as naachne waali.

Delhi goes to polls on 12 May with the counting scheduled for 23 May.
