Tennis star Sania Mirza has slammed cricket World Cup ads ‘on both sides of the border, ahead of India-Pakistan clash, scheduled for 16 June. This was after broadcasters in Pakistan and India produced TV ads mocking their rival countries.
Taking to Twitter, Sania wrote, “Cringeworthy ads on both sides of the border seriously guys, you don’t need to ‘hype up’ or market the match anymore specially with rubbish! it has ENOUGH attention already! It’s only cricket for God sake, and if you think it’s anymore than that then get a grip or get a life !!”

Sania is married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, who is a part of the current World Cup squad of Pakistan.
It was all started by Pakistani TV channel Jazz TV which produced an ad featuring a duplicate of Indian Air Force officer, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman enjoying a cup of team in Pakistani captivity. The channel had sought to recreate a real life scene involving Wing Commander Varthaman during his brief captivity in Pakistan after his fighter jet fell in the Pakistani territory in February this year.
The ad had evoked angry reactions from Indians with industrialist Harsh Goenka calling it shameful. On the other hand, one Indian broadcaster has been running a World Cup ad showing an Indian supporter call himself the father of a Pakistani supporter because of the history of Pakistan’s record of never winning against India in the World Cup.
India’s host broadcaster, Star Sports, billed 16 June as ‘Father’s Day’ evoking angry reactions from cricket fans.
This is in really bad taste. #INDvPAK #SpiritOfCricket No country is another’s father. @StarSportsIndia Don’t stoop this low. How about Englishmen teasing us as being their slaves? #GentlemensGame #India pic.twitter.com/Mdsvys1dwz
