Just weeks after becoming a surprise choice to lead the Conservative party, Boris Johnson has stunned British political pundits by securing a huge majority in the UK general elections. The Conservative is all set to win 355 seats in the 650-seat British parliament.

The extraordinary win by the Conservative under Johnson will pave the way for Britain to leave the EU at the earliest. Johnson was forced to call for the general elections after his Brexit deal was voted down in the parliament.

The Labour headed by Jeremy Corbyn appears to have borne the brunt of an indecisive leadership as the party looks destined to lose 58 seats compared to its tally in the last tally of 260 in the parliament.

In a crude shock to the Labour, the party has suffered big losses in the North, Midlands and Wales, particularly in places where voters had backed Brexit in 2016 referendum.

Reacting to his party’s huge win, Johnson said, “It does look as though this One Nation Conservative government has been given a powerful new mandate to get Brexit done.”

“Above all I want to thank the people of this country for turning out to vote in a December election that we didn’t want to call but which I think has turned out to be a historic election that gives us now, in this new government, the chance to respect the democratic will of the British people to change this country for the better and to unleash the potential of the entire people of this country.”

Corbyn, on the other hand, conceded his defeat and said that he will never lead his party into an election again.

This is Labour’s worst defeat since 1935. Meanwhile, Jo Swinson has quit as Liberal Democrat leader after losing her seat to the SNP.
