Jamia Millia University Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar on Monday said that she will file an FIR against the Delhi Police for illegally entering the campus on Sunday night and causing large-scale mayhem. Akhtar also told reporters that she will seek a high-level probe into Sunday’s violence inside the campus.
Akhtar said that whilst the physical injuries of students will heal with time, the trauma unleashed on them has left a life-long scar. She also denied reports of a student being killed saying that all students were safe now. The university administration, meanwhile, has shut down the campus.
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear petitions filed on behalf of students of Jamia Millia Islamia. The top court, however, made it clear that one did not enjoy the right to riot just because of being a student. This was after senior advocate Indira Jaising requested the apex court to take the suo moto cognisance of the violence committed on the campuses of Jamia and the Aligarh Muslim University.
“When the Police and lawyers had clashed in Delhi, the Delhi High Court had taken suo moto cognizance. Request the Supreme Court now to take suo moto notice of the violation of the human rights of the students,” she was quoted by the Bar and Bench website.
A Supreme Court Bench comprising Chief Justice of India SA Bobde and Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant said that the court will hear and decide the matter with a cool mind, not in an atmosphere of rioting. “..We know what the rights are. Just because people are throwing stones outside, it is not the reason for the Court to decide Let the rioting stop first,” CJI Bobde was quoted as saying.
Scores of Jamia students were injured in Sunday’s violence after the cops fired tear gas shells and entered the campus to allegedly beat up students. Videos of frightened and injured students taking shelter in the library and washrooms had gone viral on social media.
Police had also picked up dozens of students, who were freed on early Monday morning from the city’s various police stations.
The violence in AMU gained momentum after the members of the Uttar Pradesh were seen firing tear gas shells and damaging students’ motorbikes.
Students up and down the country have been protesting against the amended Citizenship Act, deemed to be designed to drive Muslims out of the country.
