JDU leader poll strategist Prashant Kishor has launched another attack on his own government headed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over his party’s decision to support the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the parliament. In his third such attack, Kishor also praised the chief ministers of West Bengal, Kerala and Punjab for announcing that they will not be implementing the anti-Muslim Citizenship Act.

He wrote, “The majority prevailed in Parliament. Now beyond judiciary, the task of saving the soul of India is on 16 Non-BJP CMs as it is the states who have to operationalise these acts. 3 CMs (Punjab/Kerala/WB) have said NO to #CAB and #NRC. Time for others to make their stand clear.”

Kishor had earlier critised his party after it extended support to the controversial Bill in the Lok Sabha. He had written, “While supporting #CAB, the JDU leadership should spare a moment for all those who reposed their faith and trust in it in 2015. We must not forget that but for the victory of 2015, the party and its managers wouldn’t have been left with much to cut any deal with anyone.”

His second criticism came just before the Rajya Sabha voted on the Bill. He tweeted, “Disappointed to see JDU supporting #CAB that discriminates right of citizenship on the basis of religion. It’s incongruous with the party’s constitution that carries the word secular thrice on the very first page and the leadership that is supposedly guided by Gandhian ideals.”

The new Citizenship Act provides automatic citizenship to illegal non-Muslims living in India. This is seen as a tool to declare Muslims illegal in their own country under the garb of the NRC in the future.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh have said that they will not implement the CAB in their states.

Violent protests have erupted across India particularly across the north-eastern states against the CAB.
