The cops at Jaunpur’s Chandwak police station filed an FIR against them.

“The FIR was lodged on Wednesday against a total of 271 persons for various penal offences like cheating, defiling places of worship and prejudicing national integration,” news agency PTI quoted Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar Pandey.

Among those named in the FIR are Durga Prasad Yadav, Kirit Rai and Jitendra Ramone. All of them are believed to be the natives of Jaunpur. The police swung into action after an order from a court, where a Hindu Jagran Manch worker filed a petition seeking action against them.

According to the complaint filed by one advocate, Brijesh Singh, the men accused of promoting conversions have been persuading residents of Jaunpur, Varanasi, Azamgarh and Ghazipur districts to visit a church in Baldeh village to attend the Christian prayers there.

Singh, according to the PTI report, had moved the court on 2 August, seeking its direction to the police for lodging the FIR in the matter. On 31 August, the court ordered the police to file an FIR and and probe the matter further.
