Asian Games medalist Divya Kakran on Tuesday lashed out at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal while accusing him of not keeping his promise of financial help after she won a medal at the Commonwealth Games.
The Delhi government had organised a small event to felicitate the athletes from Delhi, who had won medals at the just-concluded Asian Games in Indonesia. While thanking the Delhi government, Kakran told Kejriwal that the latter had not delivered his promise to help her financially. The athlete, who won a bronze medal in Jakarta, said that the chief minister had even stopped answering her phone calls.
Kakran said that she was capable of winning the Gold for Indian had she received the required financial help.
“I’d won a medal at the Commonwealth Games (in Gold Coast, Australia) and you had told me that I will receive more help in future. I even gave you in writing (about my help) as asked by you. But nothing was done and you even stopped taking my calls,” she told Kejriwal in front of other athletes.
She continued, “It’s great that that you are congratulating and rewarding us today but no support was given when we needed the most. Just have a look at the number of medals won by athletes from Haryana. That’s because they have the support (from the government). They receive Rs three crores. That’s quite a lot of money sir. Here, you’ve now increased it to Rs 1 crore. Earlier it was Rs 20 lakh, which is nothing.”

In response, Kejriwal reportedly told the athlete that his inability to fulfill his promise was due to the power tussle with the LG in the past. “You’ll must have read in newspapers how there are obstacles being put in front of the work we try to do. What you’re saying is right. Not just you, many athletes come to us with similar complaints. However, whichever policies we have drafted until now have been shunted for some reason or the other at the higher level. The felicitation we’re doing today is only because of the Supreme Court’s recent judgement,” Kejriwal said.

Recalling her hardships, Kakran later told ABP News, “At times I didn’t even have enough glucose to quench my thirst after practice, but I had the determination to do something and big so I would drink water and get back on the mat. When I was preparing for the Asian Games, we had approached Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for help, I told him about my torrid financial condition they even assured me of help but to no avail. Till date I haven’t received any support from the Delhi government.”
