Gautam Adani-led Adani Group has reportedly decided to withdraw defamation cases that the company had filed against news portal The Wire and its journalists. Quoting sources, news agency IANS reported, “The Adani Group is set to withdraw all #Defamation suits filed against news portal The Wire and its editors in an Ahmedabad court for articles against its companies.”

Reacting to the news the website’s editor, Siddharth Vardarajan wrote on Twitter, “We understand the Adani Group has moved to withdraw all defamation cases, civil and criminal, instituted against The Wire over the years for various articles we’ve published on the Group’s businesses. We will issue a statement once this process attains finality.”

No sooner did the IANS flash the news on the Adani Group’s intention to drop defamation cases, Twitterati concluded that this was the sign of the BJP’s certain defeat in this year’s Lok Sabha polls.

One user wrote, “Ambani yesterday and Adani today? All between the exit polls and results? What.Is .Happening?” Another user commented, “Sudden change of heart by Adami and Ambani. Is it a silence before Cyclone? Fitrat to Pata hi hai” “After Ambani it is Adani in compromise mode. Have they got the info that govt is changing? If yes how?” asked another user.

This is after Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group on Tuesday announced that it was planning to withdraw defamation cases filed in an Ahmedabad court against Congress leaders and National Herald newspaper.

Election results for this year’s Lok Sabha polls will be announced on 23 May. Almost all exit polls had predicted a big win for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party, the BJP. It’s in this context that Twitterati are perplexed by the haste with which Modi’s businessmen friends have moved in to withdraw defamation cases.

Earlier this week, the CBI had decided to give a clean chit to Mulayam Singh Yadav in a disproportionate income case.
