In a historic win for All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen, the party’s Imtiaz Jaleel Syed has defeated Shiv Sena’s Chandrakant Khaire in Aurangabad.

AIMIM candidate, journalist-turned-politician Imtiyaz Jaleel Syed trounced the sitting four-time Sena senior leader Chandrakant Khaire in a see-saw drama that ended at around 4 a.m. on Friday.

Jaleel won with a margin of 4,492 votes over Khaire – giving the AIMIM its first MP from Maharashtra.

With this victory, AIMIM managed to secure its first parliamentary seat outside of Hyderabad. While the party is particularly popular among pre-dominantly Muslim pockets in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, AIMIM leaders have been criticised for delivering inflammatory statements, including Asaduddin’s own brother and Member of the Leglislative Assembly (MLA) of Telangana, Akbaruddin Owaisi.

The Aurangabad parliamentary constituency comprising six assembly segment- Aurangabad Central, Aurangabad East, Aurangabad West, Khuldabad-Gangapur, Vaijapur and Kannad accounts for 1,933 polling booths and over 18.5 lakh voters including four lakh Muslims and about 3.5 lakh Dalits.
