Meerut, April 19: A controversial advertisement by a cancer specialist hospital in Uttar Pradesh”s Meerut said Muslim patients and their caretakers coming to the hospital must test negative for Covid-19, failing which they won”t be admitted.

The management of the hospital also asked Muslims to carry their coronavirus test reports as proof.

The advertisement by Valentis Cancer Hospital adds that in case of emergency, the patient and their attendants will be admitted but they will be tested for Covid-19 immediately. The cost for the test i.e., Rs 4,500 each will be taken from the patient. The reasons cited by the hospital included the alleged misbehaviour of the members of the ”Tablighi Jamaat” (TJ), who, the ad said, had contributed to the spread of coronavirus infection in the country.

The Uttar Pradesh Police has filed an FIR against the owner of Valentis Hospital over the matter.

Speaking to IANS, Meerut SSP Ajay Kumar Sahni said: “We have filed a case against the hospital for this inappropriate and communal advertisement and investigation is underway.”

The quarter-page advertisement in a famous Hindi daily published on April 17 also described the Jain community as :miserly” and appealed to them to contribute to the PM-CARES Fund. However, a day later, the hospital issued another advertisement in the same paper where it regretted if the first advertisement hurt the feelings of any community.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Sunday urged India to take “urgent steps” to protect the rights of its minority Muslim community and stop the incidents of “Islamophobia” in the country.

The OIC’s Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission in a tweet also said the Indian media was negatively profiling the Muslims and subjecting them to discrimination.

“OIC-IPHRC urges the #Indian Govt to take urgent steps to stop the growing tide of #Islamophobia in India and protect the rights of its” Muslim minority, it tweeted.

In an earlier tweet, the OIC-UPHRC condemned the “unrelenting vicious #Islamophobic campaign in #India maligning Muslims for spread of #COVID-19 as well as their negative profiling in media subjecting them to discrimination & violence with impunity.”

There was no immediate reaction from the Ministry of External Affairs.

India has previously hit out at the 57-member grouping of Muslim majority nations, saying bodies like OIC should not make irresponsible statements.
Earlier this week, MEA spokesperson Anurag Srivastava slammed the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) for adding “religious colour to our national goal of fighting the COVID 19 pandemic”, after the commission commented on a report that patients in a hospital in Ahmedabad were being segregated on the basis of their religion.

The USCIRF had said that they were “concerned with reports of Hindu & Muslim patients separated into separate hospital wards in #Gujarat. Such actions only help to further increase ongoing stigmatization of Muslims in #India and exacerbate false rumors of Muslims spreading COVID-19”. PTI

New Delhi: Refused to be drawn into the issue of communalizing the COVID fight in the country, Congress on Saturday said it is an attempt to divert the attention from the Government’s all round failure in tackling this unprecedented health crisis. Party alleged that  the union  government’s short  of ‘preparedness’ before effecting the lockdown has pushed  millions of people from the downtrodden sections of society particularly migrant workers on the brink of starvation.

At  a special briefing to flag the problems of retail traders, Congress senior spokesperson and former union minister, Ajay Maken said the retail trade is the most dominant economic activity outside the agriculture sector. Quoting the 6th economic census, he said it factors for about 35.41 per cent of the total economic activities and outside the agriculture sector, this is the largest. He said the government has done nothing for these retail traders whose back have been already broken due to the demonetisation, the E-Commerce competition and GST.

While raising the issue of testing Covid-19 cases in less numbers, Maken said Union and Delhi governments were not fully prepared to tackle this gigantic health crisis.

When this correspondent has drawn his attention that a section of forces and section of media is communalizing Covid issue which is weakening our fight against this deadly pandemic and do you not think, it is well-organized campaign to divert the attention from the Government’s failure?

Responding to this, senior Congress leader Ajay Maken said he would not touch any question that would help those forces, who are trying to polarize and divert the attention.

“I firmly believe that we should talk only about suggestions to the Government. How the Government can tide over the present crisis and if we touch any other question we will be helping those forces, who are trying to polarize and divert the attention. I hope you will understand my answer to this and I would just like to say that I would not answer thing other than the Covid issue, what are the lapses as we seek from the Government side and what should the Government do”, he said.

After the Nizamuddin Markaz episode, afresh attempts are made to further communalize the Covid-19 issue by using the alleged participation of Rohingya refugees in the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Mewat and in the Nizamuddin Markaz.

In this connection, a TV channel’s correspondent sought the party’s   reaction that the Ministry of Home Affairs has asked to all states and union territories to screen Rohingya Muslims in the country as it was found that many of them attended Tablighi Jamaat events in Delhi and Mewat in Haryana?

Maken said certain members in the government would want to polarize the issue in order to divert the attention from the government’s “incompetence and credibility”.

“I won’t comment on it as I have no knowledge and information about this. We are raising the questions on the preparedness of the government in tackling this health crisis while the some functionaries of government want to polarize the issue in order to divert the attention from the government’s “incompetence and credibility. We do not want to fall into this trap.”

On traders’ issue, Congress leader asked the government to clarify its 15th April Order and to come forward to rescue these traders.

The government  should also  ensure that traders  don’t have to pay fix electricity charges and some amount of help is given for paying salaries to their employees, he added while stating that as soon as the lock down period is over, these traders would not be able to stand upon their feet.

New Delhi, April 20 : In the wake of purported Islamophobic comments from Indian expats in Gulf countries and attacks on Muslims in India in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic has attracted criticism from several Arab citizens, intellectuals and activists.

Despite many Indians sacked by Gulf states for their posts on social media, there is a growing list of expats who continue to write anti-Muslim comments over the spread of Covid-19.

Mejbel Al Sharika, a Kuwaiti lawyer and Director of International Human Rights has announced to voluntarily adopt the cause of Indian Muslims at United Nations Human Council in Geneva. He has also called out Indian Muslims to help in documenting the evidence of violence.

Princess Hend al Qassimi of the Sharjah Royal Family, warned a Twitter user after he put out several tweets targeting Muslims over the COVID-19 pandemic. “your ridicule will not go unnoticed” she wrote. Later, the user deactivated all his social media profiles.

Columnist of Kuwait’s Al-Anba news Dr Mohammed Al-Sharika has tweeted in support of Indian Muslims that they are subjected to radical practices and most brutal crimes, and urged international communities to take action to save lives.

Abdur Rahman Nassar an intellectual from  Kuwait has been very critical about the way Indian Muslims are treated. In a series of tweets, he called to stop the “terrorism” fueled by Hindu right-wing group Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) while maintaining that the group does represent all Hindus and many Hindus are humanists and reject injustice.

In another tweet Nassar    said ‘Every year, more than 55 billion $ are transferred to India from the Gulf countries, and more than 120 billion annually from all Muslim countries.

Indians (mostly Hindus) are treated well in these countries.

In return, how are Muslims treated in India?

Saudi Scholar Abidi Zahrani has proposed to list all “Hindu militants” spreading hatred against Muslims and Islam while working in GCC and the Middle-East in order to seek their deportation from those countries.

UAE’s Guinness World Record Holder Suhail Al Zarooni said in a tweet  that, UAE has hosted and interacted with many communities of various religious backgrounds, so it can never support any element which disrespects any sentiment of any religion.

India has witnessed a rise in hatred against Muslims after a section of Indian media misreported a congregation organised by Islamic missionary group Tablighi Jamaat in March in New Delhi after several of the group’s members were infected with Covid-19. The misrepresentation of the incident has led to the social boycott of Muslims in many corners of India and a rise in hate crime against them including lynchings.

Bollywood actress Rakhi Sawant has criticised the individuals and media outlets, which are allegedly spreading hatred against Indian Muslims while blaming them for the spread of Covid-19.

In a video uploaded on social media platforms, she said, “Do not set Hindus and Muslims against each other. Shame on you. Do not spread misinformation.”

She added, “Don’t even by mistake say that Muslims have brought Corona. Muslims have not done it. People from every community are affected by Corona. It has come from the above for those barbarians who have committed sins against Prameshvar, Allah and Jesus”.

India belongs to Muslims as much as it belongs to Hindus, Sikhs and Christians, she added.

She also lauded the efforts of Muslims who are doing relief work amid the coronavirus lockdown in India. “Look how much help a Muslim is providing. He is providing food items as well as lifting the bier,” she said while referring to the recent incidents wherein Muslims performed last rites of Hindu persons.

Sawant’s message comes in the wake of a large scale hate campaign against Muslim in India, which began after a section of Indian media misreported a congregation organised by Islamic missionary group Tablighi Jamaat in March in New Delhi after several of the group’s members were infected with Covid-19.

The misrepresentation of the incident has led to the social boycott of Muslims in many corners of India and a rise in cyberbullying against them.

New Delhi, April 19 (IANS) Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday announced that there will be no relaxation in the coronavirus lockdown from Monday as the number of cases continues to rise in the national capital, adding the state government will review its decision after a week.

“As per the instructions of the Central government, some restrictions of the lockdown can be lifted from Monday, especially in areas that have not been severely impacted by coronavirus. We have to deliberate on which restrictions should be relaxed,” the Chief Minister said while addressing the media.

He said the Central government has also said that restrictions should not be relaxed in the hotspot areas or containment zones.

“There are containment zones in all the 11 districts in Delhi. The Delhi government has done its assessment in consultation with various experts and departments. In the last few days, there has been a considerable rise in the number of COVID-19 positive cases in Delhi. We have also increased our testing capacity.”

He said the government has decided to not relax any restrictions in Delhi for now. “We will have discussions with experts and the concerned departments again after a week and will review our decision,” he added.

According to an order, issued by Delhi Chief Secretary Vijay Dev, the government will have a comprehensive assessment on lockdown on April 27.

Speaking to media, Kejriwal said Delhi currently has the second-highest number of cases after Maharashtra.

“On Saturday, we obtained reports on 736 tests, out of which 186 or approximately 25 per cent cases were tested positive. All the 186 COVID-19 positive cases that were reported on Saturday were asymptomatic — they didn”t know they had Coronavirus. This is more dangerous and worrying because these people were living their normal routine, and they must have infected more and more people in the meantime,” he added.

Kejriwal said he interacted with one of the patients, and it was found out that the person had been distributing food in a designated food centre of the Delhi government.

“I have instructed that rapid testing of all the staff and the people who have visited the food centre be done. This means that COVID-19 has been spreading in Delhi.”

So far, Delhi has 77 containment zones that have been sealed to control the spread of the disease.

“We did random testing in the containment zones, and it was observed that no cases were reported in the areas where containment protocol was strictly followed, but a surge in cases was observed where the protocol was not followed and people defied the norms of social distancing and lockdown.”

For instance, he said, in Jahangirpuri, 26 people were tested positive for COVID-19 because they did not observe the containment protocol.

Kejriwal said that even though coronavirus is spreading in Delhi, the situation is under control, and there is no need to panic.

“There are 1,893 COVID-19 cases in Delhi, out of which 26 are in ICU, and 6 are on ventilators. As many as 46 people have lost their lives due to COVID-19.”

He said if the lockdown had not been imposed, “we would have been on par with other nations where the numbers are quite high”.

“What if 3,000 people would require the ICUs and 2,500 people would require ventilators? We have observed a similar pattern in Italy, Spain and the US, where the ICUs, ventilators and the entire healthcare system were not sufficient in treating all the patients. Our country would be suffering from a similar fate if the lockdown had not been imposed.”

He asserted that even though Delhi accounts for 2 per cent of India”s population, the cases account for 12 per cent of the total cases in the country.

“It is because Delhi is the capital of the country and it has to fight the hardest battle against COVID-19. Maximum people who came from abroad landed in Delhi, and they brought COVID-19 with them. Delhi had to suffer the brunt of it, along with the Markaz (Nizamuddin) event that happened a few days back.”

However, no new cases from the Markaz have been reported in the last four days.

A 35-year-old woman who fell sick while standing in a queue at a shop in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district to collect free ration being distributed during lockdown died at a hospital. The deceased has been identified as Shamima Bano.

The incident took place on Friday. Police have sent the body for post-mortem, officials said.

District supply officer Ramendra Pratap Singh said, “As per the villagers, the woman died of heart attack. The matter is being probed.”

“Since the phone network was not proper and the internet was slow, it was taking time to print the vouchers. As a result, the distribution of ration was taking time,” he said.

While district magistrate Kumar Prashant said “We got information about the death of a woman while standing in a queue outside a shop to get rice. The district supply officer has been sent to the spot. The cause of death is not yet clear, and it is being said that she died of heart attack. Once the (post-mortem) report comes, her family will be helped”.

The Uttar Pradesh government is providing free ration to the poor during the nationwide lockdown to stem the spread of the coronavirus. With businesses shut, many have been rendered jobless and have run out of cash to buy food.

In another incident, a migrant worker, Mukesh, has committed suicide after he sold his phone for 25000 rupees to feed his family of six in Saraswati Kunj, an urban village of Gurgaon city. His family told journalist Barkha Dutt, “He was already without work. The lockdown made it so much harder”.

India is running through the course of 40 days of lock down period, as part of its strategy to fight the Covid-19 war. But no one knows where our country is placed after that in this Covid war?  The parable of the Blind Men and an Elephant succulently sums up India’s story of fighting the Covid war.

A quick recap: India reported its first case of Covid in Kerala on January 30, 2020. It was also the day when WHO, for the sixth time in history, declared a “public health emergency of international concern.” India declared Covid-19,  a ‘Notified Disaster’ on March 13.

However it was only on March 19 that our Prime Minister wakes up to the reality and appeal to the nation for observing a day-long voluntary lock down on March 22. The country really became serious about Covid problem, when Prime Minister on March 24, announced for total lockdown of the country till April 14.

While making the announcement of 21 days lock down the Prime Minister said; Mahabharta war was won in 18 days; we will win the Corona war in 21 days.

Subsequently on April 14, our ‘Mukunda’ did not even frat on his earlier boast of winning the war in 21 days, when he extended the lock down for 19 days more.  It appears that since March 19th, the country’s leadership is grappling with ‘what to do’ syndrome and no one knows what to do!

The burning question is can we get rid of this virus and if so what is the way out? Since the beginning it is said, there are three options to get rid of the virus and there is no fourth.

One, the virus dies its natural death and frees the world from its horrendous impact. Second, a vaccination gets developed quickly and each of us gets vaccinated and get ready to work. The third is to develop the capacity to test the people and segregate them from have and have not!

The fact remains that the first two options are only day dreaming and wishful thinking which is not going to happen in the immediate future. So the only option is to quarantine people and test them for virus of doom.

Indian leadership too engaged in going for the third option. Since it does not have sufficient kits to test, its strategy is to push the people indoors and wait for the cases to emerge and then go for treatment. The assumption was that by lock down and social distancing method, the intensity of the corona virus could be broken.

The 25 days assessment suggests this strategy has miserably failed. It is said, corona virus has not yet peaked in the country. The country looks nowhere in sight of defeating the virus and each of us kept in complete darkness when we will overcome this crisis.

Notwithstanding the facts, it appears that even after the lock down extension the country is nowhere in the grip of situation. It is widely believed that lock down is only a “pause button” and after that the virus will reappear.

As the virus curve continues to grow in the country the clamor is, what should be done differently? The strategy should be “chasing the virus” instead of watching virus emergence.

The only way to pre-empting the virus attack is to put a countrywide testing architecture in place. It’s only through rapid testing of the entire country’s populace and certifying those who are healthy, quarantining those who are symptomatic and admitting those who are Covid positive, any semblance of control over the virus can be established.

It is here lays the problem because the country’s leadership has not yet put in place the resources and the paraphernalia needed to fight the virus. The country simply does not have the wherewithal or sufficient test kits to do the ‘census test.’ This is born by the fact that India doesn’t come even in the top 40 countries, which are doing something to challenge this deadly virus.

The country’s leadership is silent about its gigantic failure. No one from the top is trying to brief the people about the amount of capacity building the government is able to achieve so far. The reality is after 25 days of lock down we have been able to build the capacity to test only “199 people per 100,000. This is peanuts for the size and scale of India’s population.

India’s Covid war can be only be won if we are able to get enough testing kits. Right now local supply line of kits is yet to begin and we are importing the kit from China. We all know to test each and every person in this country is a herculean task but then there is no short cut to this. In this, the blame certainly goes to the government in failing in its duties.

The current leadership in order to divert the attention from these pressing problems has consciously pushing the country into the communal cauldron. The people are worried about the communal virus than the corona virus.

Meanwhile, the gimmicks of clapping and beating the vessel, lighting the candle are done by the leadership to keep the people busy that it’s trying its best to fight the Covid war.

In a cool and dispassionate analysis India’s Covid-19 war is not heading anywhere. Indian leadership has miserably failed to tackle the corona virus war. The current leadership is too arrogant to tell to the people what the magnitude of the problem is, what it is doing to tackle the problem and what will be the time frame in which the Covid war will get over. The current set of people really do not know how fix up the things.

At the moment people’s anger against this government is at its boiling point. If a referendum held now, the Parliamentary majority that this government enjoys and is the real cause of its arrogance will get a royal thrashing. It’s high time for the people of this country to call off the bluff of this government. If the people do not like to do this, then the only option left for them is to look at the sky and ask for of mercy.

Aligarh: An alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University has developed the first indigenous coronavirus testing kit in response to World Health Organisation (WHO)’s call to all countries to ramp up coronavirus testing.

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) alumnus from the Department of Biochemistry, Mr Nadeem Rahman, Director, NuLife Consultants and Distributors Pvt. Ltd, New Delhi has developed India’s first Antibody based testing kit which takes less than 15 minutes to yield accurate result. Its cost is 500 rupees at present and the labs charge 4500 rupees for it. The new kit will provide the general population in India with adequate access to cost-effective testing.

Mr Nadeem Rahman with his team

Mr Rahman was permitted by the government authorities during the nation-wide lockdown to reopen the NuLife Consultants and Distributors Pvt. Ltd lab, where he developed India’s first ‘Anti-Body based Testing Kit’ to do finger-prick tests, which only takes nearly fifteen minutes to yield accurate results.

The testing kits launched in just a span of two weeks have been approved by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and soon the regular production will start, said Mr Rahman.

“We are confident of churning out one lakh kits a day to bring a faster and suitable solution for large-scale screenings,” he added. Thanking the Government of Uttar Pradesh and ICMR for putting the trust in his team, Mr Rahman pointed out that a set of the testing kit will cost around 500-600 Rupees and the price is likely to further go down.

“The best part of this rapid and lesser time-taking kit is that it is economical to produce unlike the expensive RT-PCR testing kits,” he said. Mr Rahman added that the anti-body based kit will ease the pressure on the pathology services struggling with COVID-19 detection in the Country.

“We are proud that an AMU alumnus has developed the much needed affordable testing kit when we see the surge in the number of coronavirus cases despite stringent measures are being implemented in the country. It is a major cause of worry,” said AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor, while praising Mr Rahman for his invaluable contribution to India’s fight to curb COVID-19.

Prof Qayyum Husain, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences who taught Mr Rahman when he was pursuing BSc and MSc in Biochemistry at AMU said that the launch of first anti-body based testing kit in India is an extra-ordinary achievement in the public interest.

AMU and its alumni are at the forefront of India’s fight against coronavirus. The Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College of the University has already conducted 2500 free-of-costs tests.

Soon after many in India’s mainstream media launched an all-out assault against Tablighi Jamaat, accusing their headquarters in the capital Delhi of spreading coronavirus, the resident welfare association (RWA) of my locality in South Delhi, home to mostly middle-income groups, banned the entry of vegetable sellers and other menial workers. A WhatsApp message by the RWA secretary did not use the term “to boycott Muslims”, but everybody knew all those banned belonged to this religious group. In many other housing societies, the RWAs were blunt in their messages. A friend living in a posh locality in the outskirts of Delhi said their RWA directed all members not to host Muslims till the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

Reports of communalization of the pandemic are pouring in from different parts of the country. Last week, a 22-year-old Muslim man was lynched in New Delhi after being accused of spreading the pandemic. Earlier, another young Muslim man was beaten to death in the eastern state of Jharkhand after a mob accused him of spitting. Hindu-right is drawing sadistic pleasure form trends like “Corona Jihad” and “Tablighi Virus”, and the hate such posts have generated, little realizing that the virus does not know the faith.

In Israel, the behavior of Jewish settlers and off late now by Israeli soldiers caught on camera spitting on the doors of Arab homes and dumping medical waste in Palestinian localities has raised the level of hate to new proportions.

More than a decade ago, Paul Silverstein, an anthropologist at Reed College in the U.S. city of Portland, Oregon, wrote about the realities for Muslims, saying replace Muslims with Jew, and you will get a relatively serviceable definition of anti-Semitism. “Muslims are the object of a series of stereotypes, caricatures, and fears which are not based in a reality and are independent of a person’s experience with [them],” he said.

Kevin Sachs, a Zurich-born Canadian film distributor, believes that the contemporary Muslim question is almost identical to the Jewish question of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The accusations often made against Islam — that the Islamic tradition seems monolithic, intolerant, primitive and inferior to the western one — are the same as famous German philosopher Bruno Bauer wrote about Jews in 1844. He had argued against equal rights for Jews. In contrast, in the same year, the Ottoman Empire had issued an Edict of Toleration, easing restrictions on Jews in Palestine. Voltaire, an 18th-century French writer, historian, and philosopher, also described Judaism as a backward, unenlightened, and intolerant religion.

In the middle of the 14th century, when plague infected one-third of Europe’s population, rumors spread wild that Jews were poisoning wells to spread the disease. It led to the massacre of thousands of Jews. Many Jewish villages were wiped out. The communalization of pandemics has been effectively used in the west to target Jews.

Recently when the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was telling a delegation of doctors that “unfortunately instructions are not strictly adhered to in the Arab sector,” he forgot how Haredi Jews — a group within the Orthodox Jews, known for their strict interpretation of Judaism and opposition to modern values and practices — were cocking a snook at his authority by refusing to abide by social distancing and quarantine norms. His government has described the Haredi Jewish neighborhoods as hotspots.

India uses lockdown to punish activists

In India, when the whole country is under lockdown, the police are swooping on many young activists who had participated in the anti-citizenship law protests over the past few months. Prominent among them, Safoora Zargar, a student of Jamia Millia Islamia, was called for questioning on April 10 by the Special Cell of Delhi Police, and was subsequently arrested. Before her arrest, Meeran Haider, a scholar of Jamia Millia Islamia, had also been arrested.

According to writer Karuna John, many other students and activists have been called for questioning by the Special Cell. All this is happening as life in the city has almost come to a standstill under the now extended lockdown. Other young activists like Khalid Saifi and Ishrat Jahan, who were arrested just before lockdown, continue to remain in jail. In the wake of lockdown and risk of a pandemic, they are unable to access legal aid as the courts are only functioning partially, and lawyers are unable to work properly.

Most of the scholars arrested are in the final stages of earning their advanced university degrees and many of them hail from other states. This has also put a great emotional and financial burden on their families back home. It is also an attempt to prevent the emergence of future leadership among Muslims.

On April 10, a leading news channel India Today TV aired a “special investigation” on its primetime show calling Islamic seminaries or Madrassas as hotspots. It had used a sting operation against three Delhi-based madrasas — Madrasa Darul-ul-Uloom Usmania, Madrasa Islahul Mumineer, and Madrasa Jamia Mohammadia Haldoni.

The channel claimed the three caretakers deliberately have kept students in their madrasas in cramped spaces, violating all lockdown guidelines, and hiding the students from the police. It also claimed the caretakers had links with the Tablighi Jamaat — whose congregation in Delhi’s Nizamuddin has been blamed by the Indian media for causing a spurt in coronavirus cases — and, therefore, were risking the lives of the children.

But soon other media outlets like Newslaundry punctured this sting. The students from the eastern state of Bihar were supposed to return to their homes. Their tickets were booked but had to stay back due to the lockdown. On March 21, the government had advised educational institutes to let students who were still in hostels to continue staying on campus until the coronavirus outbreak was contained. These madrassas were in fact following this advisory rather than flouting lockdown guidelines.

Hindu group congregation in London

Almost coinciding with the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi, a Hindu group International Society for Krishna Consciousness, known as the Hare Krishna movement, was hosting a meeting in London on March 12-15. So far, 21 devotees who attended this meeting have been confirmed to have been infected with the coronavirus. Five of them passed away. But the U.K. government or people there did not communalize the virus or did not put the blame on the Hindu group for spreading the pandemic.

While putting the whole blame on the irrationality or Tablighi Jamaat, who should have very well desisted to call any gathering after pandemic outbreak, other events were going on in India. The parliament with its 790 members was in session till March 23. In the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, the political drama was being enacted to dislodge the opposition-ruled government. On March 20-23, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in provincial Bhopal carried out massive celebratory rallies attended by new Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and other senior state BJP leaders.

On April 11, Chouhan told Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a video conference that the spike in cases in his state was due to people, who had returned from Delhi after attending a Tablighi Jamaat congregation. But his officials dispute his claim. Local media blamed three senior government officials for spreading the virus, by attending meetings and avoiding social distancing despite showing symptoms of the disease.

Principal Secretary (of Health) Pallavi Jain Govil, Additional Director Veena Sinha and Deputy Director Virendra Kumar Chaudhary tested positive for the virus on April 4. Sons of both Govil and Sinha had returned from the U.S. and did not reveal their travel history to authorities.

The COVID-19 is affecting all of us and threatening our collective health — economic, social, psychological and physical wellbeing. Instead of communalizing the pandemic and identifying the virus with faith or a community, there is an urgent need to work together to beat this common enemy. If it goes out of hand, it will hardly recognize faith or boundaries. All religious groups, believers or non-believers are equally vulnerable to the dangers of the virus. Let us join hands and put a stiff fight together to save humanity. Help, not hate, will defeat the virus. AA

New Delhi:   Healthcare professional and activists pan-India body, Progressive Medicos and Scientists Forum (PMSF) on Friday condemned sacking of  Dr Piyush Pushkar Singh by  North Delhi Municipal Corporation from its Bara Hindu Rao hospital for distributing the PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to people  who were allegedly not in need.

PMSF said the pretext taken by the North Corporation Commissioner Varsha Joshi, for the termination of Dr Piyush’s services was highly condemnable. Dr Piyush was pursuing post-graduate studies in orthopedics department of the hospital.

It is alleged that Dr Piyush diverted the PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and gave it to persons not requiring it, without the knowledge or permission of the medical superintendent of Hindu Rao hospital.

The Commissioner is reported to have asserted, “He cannot decide priority of requirements. This was the immediate and essential reason for his termination.” The concerned IAS officer Varsha Joshi also tweeted that she is an employer and that she cannot tolerate such behavior on part of an employee.  The civic body is controlled by the BJP.

Defending Dr Piyush,  PMSF, national president. Dr Harjit Singh Bhatti said he distributed the PPEs in good faith among his colleagues who had been caring for the patients expositing themselves to undue risk.

An acute shortage of PPE has been well known by now, and has also been highlighted by several RDAs (Resident Doctors Associations) in the country. With the cooperation of RDA at AIIMS, Dr Piyush had arranged for a limited supply of PPE through the aegis of Dr Monika Foundation on his own initiative. Dr Bhattt noted that it was indeed remarkable deed in times of such acute health emergency in the country.

However, this high nosed IAS officer continues to suffer from such colonial hangover as to consider publically funded institutions as her personal fiefdom and act in a manner antithetical to the delivery of health services, he added.

“Even as the Prime Minister has made a show of thanking the ‘corona warriors’, the Commissioner of the municipal corporation run by his own party is running down the efforts of doctors in a patently vindictive manner.”

It is said that the actual reason for Dr Piyush’s termination, as revealed by a show cause notice dated 16 March 2020, issued to him by the Hindu Rao hospital administration is that he had posted a video of the orthopedic emergency ward on his Facebook page on the 14 of March. The video had shown seepage into the ward, which had existed for many days without redress. It need be no mystery that the conditions of maintenance in publically funded hospitals in the country, as also in Delhi are abominable and injurious to the health of the patients due to niggardly public expenditure on health. Health bureaucracy cannot but be fully aware of such conditions and ought to be mindful of improving these, especially if any public-spirited individual brings them to public notice.

Instead, victim blaming and seemingly self-righteous behavior under the veil of colonial era rules and regulations has become their wont. PMSF demanded that Dr Piyush Pushkar Singh should be reinstated forthwith without any adverse consequences to his service record.

It also demanded that  an enquiry be instituted into the circumstances of action taken by the Commissioner of North Delhi Municipal Corporation and responsibility be fixed for the same.

Meanwhile, main opposition Congress has also taken the note of Dr Piyush sacking. While raising the safety issue of healthcare personnel, Party spokesperson Ajay Maken said the Delhi government has failed to provide them protective equipments in adequate numbers. Demanding the revocation of Dr Piyush’s termination, he said as many as 55 health care professionals have been infected in Delhi which is the highest in the country.

New Delhi, April 17: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Friday said that the ratio between number of patients recovered and number of deaths is 80:20 and 13.6 per cent people have recovered so far.

The news is a big relief amid the novel coronavirus scare in the country. Addressing a daily media briefing, Joint Secretary of Health and Family Welfare Lav Agarwal said that the ministry has analysed the data of cases of novel coronavirus in the country in many ways. It has been found that the rate of recovery of the patient is higher than that of the deceased.

“At least 1,749 people recovered so far which is 13.6% as on today.” He also said that the doubling rate that means in how many days numbers of cases get doubled in the country has also reduced. “Our doubling rate of the number of cases is 6.2 days. The analysis is based on data of the last 7 days. It was 3 days before the lockdown. It is a product of how we are managing situations at field level. This is an ongoing process. We need to intensify our vigil to reduce the doubling rate even more,” said Agarwal.

Agarwal also said that there are at least 19 states and UTs where the doubling rate is less than the national average. These are Kerala, Uttarakhand, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Puducherry, Bihar, Odisha, Telangana, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab Assam and Tripura.

The Joint secretary explained that the data was analysed in another way also in which growth factor and outcome ratio were calculated. “Growth factor is calculated by comparing today”s cases with the number of cases that came yesterday. We have found that the average growth factor is at 1.2 since April 1 which was 2.1 at an average between March 15 and March 31. There is 40 per cent decline in average growth factor even as we have increased the number of testing by testing even ILI (Influenza Like Illness) and SARI (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) samples,”” Agarwal said.

He also said that the outcome ratio which is number of recovered people against number of deaths stood in the proportion of 80:20 in India which is higher than that in several other counties. “Although every death is a matter of concern for the country. But we have found that the ratio between recovered COVID-19 patients vs number of deaths, is 80:20 in India, which is higher than that in several other counties,” said Agarwal.

New Delhi : More than 3500 academicians, jurists, actors, writers and artists have condemned Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to lodge two FIRs against online media outlet The Wire and one of its founders Siddharth Varadarajan. In a joint statement, they have called it “a direct attack on freedom of media”.

The signatories called upon the government of Uttar Pradesh to withdraw the FIRs against Varadarajan and The Wire, and drop all criminal proceedings.

They also urged the government of India and all state governments not to use the pandemic as a cover to trample upon media freedom. “A medical emergency should not serve as the pretext for the imposition of a de facto political emergency,” the statement said.

The signatories also called upon the Indian media to “not communalise” the pandemic. They added the police action against The Wire also comes against the backdrop of the “demonization” of Muslims in a section of the media as being responsible for the spread of the novel coronavirus in India. On April 6, the WHO felt the need to reiterate the principle that media should avoid religious or other profiling of COVID-19 cases.

Uttar Pradesh Police has registered two FIRs against The Wire in connection with a “factual story” on the Tablighi Jamaat and its exposure to Covid-19. The article pointed out that “Indian believers” more generally have been late to adopt precautions and avoid congregation, recalling UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s plans, as late as March 18, to proceed with a religious fair at Ayodhya and his flouting of the national lockdown and social distancing norms by taking part in a religious ceremony along with others on March 25.

The signatories include Justice Madan B. Lokur, former judge of the Supreme Court, Jim Spigelman AC QC, a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and a former chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Justice K. Chandru, former judge of the Madras high court, and Justice Anjana Prakash, former judge of the Patna high court, Farhan Akhtar, Bollywood actor and director and Arundhati Roy, renowned author among others.

Delhi Minorities Commission chairman Dr Zafarul-Islam Khan on 15 April said that Muslim clerics should “boycott godi media” [outlets that apparently favour Hindu nationalist BJP party-led government] and reject any call from them to appear on their shows.

He issued an appeal on Twitter over the same. In his appeal, Khan said, “Fabrication and humiliation of invited guests by godi channels, like Republic, Times Now and Aajtak etc., have crossed all limits.” He added that “innocent Maulanas [clerics] and enthusiastic laymen” provide them an opportunity to humiliate them and the whole community.

If anyone approaches you to appear on their shows, ask them to invite Prof. Tahir Mahmood, Prof. Faizan Mustafa, Abdul Khaliq [LJP], Anil Chamadia, John Dayal and Shamsul Islam, he added.

Khan maintained that he is boycotting Republic and Times Now since long. “I have told Times Now that I will not appear on its shows during this life-time and have told Republic that I will not appear on their shows even in my next life,” he said.

The corona virus pandemic has spread in more than 210 countries and disrupted social and economic life across the globe. It has changed our working, playing and learning style: schools are closed, online homework is given and parents are asked to supervise their kids, offices are shutdown, sports leagues have been cancelled, and many people have been asked to work from home.

Lockdown is imposed on more than 3.5 billion people around the world. Faith groups are invited to present their point of view; medical experts are busy day and night all over the world to identify the effective treatment. Financial advisors are busy suggesting several measures to overcome the economic crisis caused by Covid-19. There is a need to work collectively, suggested by various heads of governments. Mass media is a powerful force shaping our views.

Prayers are being offered by religious leaders regularly and words of support offered to the people of the world; everyone has doubled down on prayers in recent weeks to ease worries over the virus. We have been observing the interactions between religious and scientific communities. While some of us may regard religion and science as at odds in our culture, the fact is that many communities rely on their religious leaders to guide their attitudes about scientific findings. Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish and civic leaders from all over the world are doing whatever they can do to save humanity from a common enemy. This particular enemy does not see any division in humanity. It is destroying humanity without any discrimination.

Some people think one of the best things religious leaders can do is to align with scientists, physicians or have other expertise on how viruses can be controlled. For them religious leaders and scientific communities should join together in pursuing wholeness and healing of the world. Covid-19 pandemic has impacted religious and non-religious communities in various ways, the cancellation of the worship services as well as the cancellation of pilgrimages and festivals. Churches, mosques, and temples have been locked. General Secretary of the World Council of Churches announced that, “This situation calls on our solidarity and accountability, mindfulness, care and wisdom… [as well as] for our signs of faith, hope and love”.

Muslims are advised to return back to their Allah for guidance and forgiveness. We are told corona virus is a reminder to us for all of our sins. Regardless of social and financial positions, we are subject to corona virus. No boundary line of any country can stop it. Apparently, we are helpless. Allah controls everything; He alone can relieve us from corona virus and other difficulties caused by it. We must return to Him and seek His protection.

We are a thinking creature and contemplate continuously. But in this process, we miss one important and basic thing. We are thinking based on our various perspectives. We have developed several methods and modes of thinking. We have several theories of knowledge, religions, ideologies and isms. We always think based on our own perspectives and frameworks and think we are moving in the right direction. I am watching news and videos and realizing that all over the world roads, localities are totally silent. Busy city centres, shopping malls, offices in high rising buildings are closed. Everywhere there is only one scene, the scene of silence. I am thinking if our fate is the same then why did we create so many faiths be they religion, ideologies or isms. Can all these be right at a time? We benefit from water, sunlight, air, fruits, rice, wheat, vegetables which are same then why do we have different perspectives on life? Why did we divide humanity into nations and put restrictions on the movement of people whereas humanity seems to be one? Why did we produce nuclear weapons of mass destruction? If one virus can destroy us and our powerful economies, then why are we divided? Why are our technologies, at some point, unable to protect us? Why did the Indian prime minister, Modi, ban a medicine for export and why did his American counterpart Trump, threaten him?

I am sure we would be able to control sooner or later corona virus like China has done. We humans are capable of doing it. But can we be able to control our various perspectives, differences, enmities, divisions, greed and lust for power? Would we be able to protect people around the world with the same spirit of collective fighting against Covid-19 or will our sense of nation and pride will stop us. Would we be able to treat every nation, weak or powerful, equally and bury our sense of pride of being super or major powers against others? Is the notion of national interest above and higher than the interest of humanity? Can humanity be divided permanently into nations? Are not the nations and tribes for the sake of introduction and cooperation? Don’t we need to think collectively about everything especially? The major lesson from corona virus seems to be the problem of our perception about our own selves. Are we really free from any control from outside? Is the truth and reality of life one or various? Don’t we need to rethink our mode of thinking and understanding? Let us come forward at a time when we are locked downed in our houses about our mode of thinking, epistemologies and methodologies and share with one another and make sure with certainty and authenticity that we are able to think ethically and scientifically and also capable to save humanity from self destruction and allow it to live in peace, free from diseases, weapons and wars.

India’s former Foreign Secretary M K Rasgotra (1982-85), speaking at the seventh Non Aligned summit held in New Delhi in March 1983, had said; ‘the world has become so interconnected that if you touch a flower here, you may disturb the stars.’

As a school boy, I heard these words on the black and white TV at my sister’s home in New Delhi. His words still keeps ringing into my years and now some 37 years after, when I watch the Corona – Tabligue Jamat link debate, on my Sony HD TV his words becomes prophetic.

This is because the way Islamofobia, communalism and hate mongering against Islam and Muslims is being telecast on the Indian TV sets under state patronage; it definitely has ‘disturbed the stars.’

My concerns are not unfounded because there are two worrying statements coming from two prominent individuals one from the GCC and other from the UAE combing make 11 countries in the gulf region.

These statements even though are coming from individuals and not from state heads is a source of worry to the eight million of Indian expatriates earning their livelihood in the oil rich gulf region. It is also a cause of concern to the families in India who are living on tax free remittances coming from the Gulf region.

The first statement is made by a scholar from Saudi Arabia Mr. Abidi Zahrani who has proposed that Hindus involved in spreading hatred and committing crimes against the Muslims should be sent back to India from GCC countries.

GCC means Gulf Cooperation Council which is a group of six countries in the Persian Gulf region: Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates are its members.

In a tweet Mr Zahrani said; “Gulf States host millions of Hindus, some of whom are infected with COVID-19 and are treated free of charge regardless of their faith while fascist Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu terrorist gangs while following the Hindutva agenda are committing crimes against its own Muslim citizens.”

Mr Abidi Zahrani further said; “I propose to the respected followers of Islam to list out all the Hindus who are working in the GCC region and spreading hate against Islam, Muslims or our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), to track them and initiate the process to send them back to India.

If this is not music for the Indian ruling elite then the second statement that comes from Princess Hend Al Qassimi, a member of the royal family of United Arab Emirates is poignantly haunting.  Princess Qassimi said, though the ruling family of UAE is “friends with Indians”, but hate Islam hate Muslims campaign is “not welcome”.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) consists of seven independent city-states: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm al-Qaiwain, Fujairah, Ajman and Ra’s al-Khaimah.  Around 3.3 million Indians are living in the UAE and they constitute roughly 30 per cent of the country’s population.

Princess Qassimi while responding to a series of “Islamophobic posts” on the micro blog Twitter said anyone who is “openly racist and discriminatory in the UAE will be fined and made to leave” immediately.

The UAE royalty was responding to twitter posts of a Hindu Indian living in UAE targeting Muslims over the March congregation of Tablighi Jamaat in New Delhi. He allegedly used abusive language against the Tablighis, calling them “radical Islamist terrorists”. This micro blogger in his earlier tweet had said, all Islamic organizations “should be kept on vigilant watch or barred” as they only spread violence and unrest.

Taking a note of such unsavory tweets, the UAE royal princess slammed the micro blogger and giving stern warning that such kind of people “will not go unnoticed.”’  “All employees are paid to work, no one comes for free. You make your bread and butter from this land which you scorn and your ridicule will not go unnoticed,” she wrote.

According to our government sources, a total of 3,336 Indians tested positive for Covid-19 infection, majority being in the Gulf region.  There are 2,061 Indians who have been tested positive residing in Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, UAE, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Most of them are getting free treatment in their respective countries.

India as a matter of policy has decided not to bring back its stranded citizens from these countries. The Indian official sources say that Prime Minister Modi had discussions with leaders of the Gulf countries about the welfare of Indians in the Gulf region.

However, the official sources did not divulge upon did what the leaders of the region had told to the Indian Prime Minister. It is on record that the United Arab Emirates has warned of possible action against countries refusing to allow their citizens to return.

Well the other side of the story is always sacrificed in the Indian media and what is heard is what is being told in this country.  It is not true that hate Muslim, hate Islam campaign that is on full throttle scale drummed up in the Indian media is not getting noticed.

TN Ninan, Chairman of Business Standard and a well regard journalist, has boldly said that marginalization of Muslims has become a ‘jan-andolan’ in India.

This statement is somewhat true. Abusing Muslims and denigrating Islam has become the pet theme of the large section of Indian media. This narrative has a cascading impact on the world wide Indians who live on the staple diet and feed on Indian media.

Among them there are many who are living in the so called Islamic countries. Swayed by the tone tenor of Indian media’s diatribe against Muslims and Islam they essay their mind on the social media sites, little knowing what damage they are doing to the fellow expatriates living in the gulf region.

The epic center of the hate mongering is in India. This is because some Indians have labelled the faith of Corona virus to Islam and Muslims are treated as terrorists fighting the Corona Jihad

India’s ruling elite that’s currently gleefully watching the rants of the wounded civilization on their television sets, are taking solace that they are winning the battle in the ‘clash of civilization.’ Little they realize that India rests in the soft belly of the Islam arch, can only survive like a tongue between the jowls.

To cut the story short, the alarming voices have started ringing the bells. The seed of hatred sown in the country in the garb of fight against COVID-19 under the watchful eyes of the current ruling elite will have to be redeemed long after this unseen virus goes into oblivion.

Dr Abdul Rashid Agwan

One angle of mainstreaming and universalization of Ummah lies in its participation in resolving some of the critical issues and problems of the world in the light of explicit teachings of Islam. Muslims’ successful venturing in this regard will enhance their social receptivity and they will be able to enjoy more clout in human affairs in due course of time, apart from discharging what is their Islamic responsibility. For instance, the present world is facing some acute problems which may become acuter in future while posing some serious challenges and hardships for humanity at large. If Muslims join others in resolving these problems, while taking inspiration from their faith, this will generate respect for both, Islam and Muslims. There is no doubt that Islam is replete with various useful teachings which should be deemed effective in dealing with many future issues.

A list of such issues may be developed for action wherein Islam provides abundant guidance in their resolution. An initial inventory in this regard should include racism, environmental degradation, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, food scarcity, water hygiene, alcoholism, drug abuse, consumer rights, suicide, status of woman, caring the aged people, moral degradation, etc. Besides several international issues, many local and national level issues can be envisaged wherein Islam gives evident guidance and encourages Muslims to take up those issues earnestly for saving innumerable human beings from distress, delusion and destruction. Importance of this engagement can be understood from one example from the above-mentioned list, i.e. the water hygiene.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) wisely instructed his adherents regarding many kinds of hygiene, including the use of water for cleanliness. He was born in a desert-torn land where water was a precious thing. Yet, he gave a system where ablution of exposed parts of body has been made obligatory not once a day, but at least five times. An ablution includes washing of hands up to elbow, mouth, nostrils, face and feet. He also taught to properly wash private parts and hands after the call of nature, rather full ablution is preferred. He made it obligatory to take bath at least once a week and also whenever the body becomes unclean due to various specified reasons. He said, “The blessing of food is (received by) washing (the hands) before and washing (the hands) after (taking) it.” He forbade exhaling on drinking water or putting fingers in it. He also said, “When you get up from bed, don’t put your hand in a bowel (of food or drink) before washing it three times.” The Qur’ān (2:222) also says Allah “… loves those who keep themselves pure and clean.”

Significance of the water hygiene inculcated by Islam can be understood from the fact that “most problematic infections in hospitals and the community such as MRSA, VRE, Clostridium difficile, Pneumonia, etc spread due to poor hand-hygiene. Regular hand-washing is the best method for preventing the spread of infection since water has been found an effective germ killer. MRSA is found in wounds, armpits, the nose and groin; VRE can be found in the urine, feces and blood; C. difficile germs can be found in feces and Pneumonia is often times airborne, infecting people through cough and sneezes. All of these germs can be spread through skin contact, usually by people contaminating surfaces with dirty hands.” Nowadays, hand hygiene is considered important not only for common people but also for health workers. In the wake, World Health Organisation has recently started an annual campaign under the caption, ‘Save Lives: Clean Your Hands’. It has been reported that since 2009, new cases of MRSA and C. difficile have fallen by 41% and 30% respectively in England. Now, World Handwash Day is observed on 15 October involving 200 million people in more than 100 countries. The campaign of ‘handwashing with soap’ was originally launched for saving millions of children in developing countries from diarrhea and acute respiratory diseases. Water hygiene is now an upcoming practice but it was part of Islamic traditions long back. If Muslims fervently participate in such global campaigns or initiate their own ones, while reflecting on relevant teachings of Islam, the act will definitely promote the community’s mainstreaming in a big way.

New Delhi, Apr 16: Micro blogging site Twitter has suspended the account of Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut’s sister and her PR manager Rangoli Chandel after she wrote a post that allegedly read, ” make these mullahs [Muslims] + secular media stand in a line and shoot them dead”.

She made the comment while referring to an incident, in which a medical team was allegedly attacked by a group of people in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad district. The incident took place when the medical team reached Moradabad’s Nawabganj area for screening of the people who had allegedly come in touch of a coronavirus patient.

In her tweet, Chandel said, “the history they may call us nazis who cares, life is more imp than fake image”.

Several Twitter users had reported Chandel’s account on the micro-blogging site and some of them had also addressed Mumbai Police seeking action against her. This finally resulted in suspension of her account.

Several users have thanked Twitter for its decision to block Chandel’s account. Jewellery designer Farah Khan wrote, “Thank you @Twitter @TwitterIndia @jack for suspending this account. I reported this because she targeted a specific community and called for them to be shot along with liberal media and compared herself to the Nazis.”
