New Delhi, 4 Feb : Students and Alumni of the Centre for Historical Studies, JNU have condemned the slapping of draconian UAPA and sedition charges against Sharjeel Imam and the vilification of dissenting Muslim voices by the state machinery.
In a solidarity statement more than 250 students and alumni of the Centre for Historical Studies, JNU said ‘This has been aided and abetted by a continuous media trial that Sharjeel Imam has been subjected to. An edited clip of Sharjeel Imam’s speech has been taken out of context and circulated from the twitter handle of Sambit Patra, a BJP spokesperson. This clip has not only been employed by various media networks to target Sharjeel, but has also been actively used to discredit the protests against CAA in Shaheen Bagh and other sites across the country’.
Sharjeel Imam, a student of the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University has been charged with UAPA and sedition on 25 January 2020 for a speech that he made in Aligarh Muslim University against the CAA, NRC and NPR. In the following days, four state governments have filed First Information Reports against him as well.
‘We condemn the use of a draconian and colonial-era law on Sharjeel Imam who has been a vocal critic of the Citizenship Amendment Act and the use of the National Register of Citizens to disenfranchise lakhs of residents. This blatant targeting of the minority Muslim identity that he represents is effectively aided by these laws that are used to hound and suppress dissenting and marginalized voices’ said the statement.
The statement also condemns ‘the vilification of dissenting Muslim voices by the state machinery’.
‘This has been aided and abetted by a continuous media trial that Sharjeel Imam has been subjected to. An edited clip of Sharjeel Imam’s speech has been taken out of context and circulated from the twitter handle of Sambit Patra, a BJP spokesperson. This clip has not only been employed by various media networks to target Sharjeel, but has also been actively used to discredit the protests against CAA in Shaheen Bagh and other sites across the country.
We condemn the arbitrary arrests of three students of Aligarh Muslim University—Ahmed Mujtaba Faraz, Tahir Azmi and Siddharth Gulati.’
‘We also condemn the suppression of other dissenting voices such as Akhil Gogoi, Bittu Sonowal and Dharjya Konwar who have also been viliHed for their protests against the CAA. Further, we condemn India TV’s media trial of Afreen Fatima, a student of the School of Languages, Jawaharlal Nehru University and an active critic of the CAA. A doctored video of her speeches has been unethically used to sensationalize and manipulate the contexts and content of her words. We unequivocally stand against the Islamophobic nature of the state which is ferociously criminalizing Musli identity and dissent against the CAA’ it added.
‘The undersigned students and alumni of the Centre for Historical Studies, JNU extend our solidarity to Sharjeel Imam and members of his family who have also been at the receiving end of harassment by the state authorities.’
The statement demands ‘the revocation of all charges against Sharjeel Imam and that such harassment and intimidation of his family end immediately.’
