Reaching out to migrant workers mostly from Bihar, Odisha, Assam and West Bengal is Coimbatore based All Religious Affinity Movement (ARAM) state chief Haji J Mohamed Rafi, who alongwith Jagannath Textiles and C3 Saibaba Colony Police Station distributed food packets besides grocery pack containing essential commodities like rice, dhal, cooking oil across Saibaba Colony neighbourhood here.

Speaking to this scribe, Rafi said that he was pained to see many migrant workers finding it difficult to get their daily essential items for preparing food and were reluctant to seek any help from others for food. Following the nation wide lockdown, there is hardly any shops selling groceries or vegetables in and around Saibaba Colony and the interior areas.

Left in the lurch as to what to do, they started moving hither and thither in search of food, he said adding that he alongwith the Jagannath Textiles management and C3 Saibaba Colony police station personnel decided to cook food, pack them and distribute at strategic locations with the help of police personnel. On the first day, they distributed to over 1500 persons including those left languishing on roadsides.

Not just once, the organisors gave breakfast. lunch and dinner. In a step further, he said that a bag containing provisions including rice, dhal, cooking oil, flour and other essential items were also distributed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Karthikeyan and C3 Saibaba Colony Police Station Chandralekha at Saibaba Colony area.

Rafi said that it has been decided to continue this mega exercise till the end of lockdown period (April 14) as it he felt the ‘best service is annadanam’ which he imbibed it from former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s brainchild scheme which was launched by her wayback in 2002 at Mylapore Kabaleeswarar Temple.
C2 Saibaba Colony police station personnel also joined him in the distribution food packets around Saibaba Colony. The team distributed at Thadagam road, Velandipalayam, NSR Road, Mettupalayam Road, Edayarpalayam and Kovilmedu areas.

“My intention is to ensure that no one goes hungry”, he said doing annadanam is nothing new to him as he has been doing it for several years on several occasion.
It may be noted that ARAM led by Rafi distributed essential items like rice, dhal, cooking oil and other items to people affected by heavy rain in Nagapattinam. And he makes it a point to lend a hand to people in distress in even far off places. Interestingly, his spouse Fathima is behind in all his service initiatives. All the more, he has earned the goodwill of the people cutting across communal lines for his social activities. He has been helping many students in their education besides extending marriage assistance to girls and reaching out to widows left uncared for by taking care of them.

‘Service to Mankind is Service to God’ is his dictum wherein he is a saviour for the needy and those who knock his doors for help. To be precise, he derives pleasure in helping those in need. Tears trickled down the cheeks of migrant workers, who thanked the organisors for the timely gesture.
