New Delhi, Feb26 : GTB Hospital authorities have told India Today that the death toll in northeast Delhi violence has climbed to 20.

The Delhi HC held an urgent hearing at midnight after two days of incessant violence and rampage across Northeast Delhi. The HC told Delhi Police to ensure safety and immediate medical aid for all those who have been injured in the violence. Meanwhile, Delhi Metro authorities have said all entry and exit gates at all stations have been opened and normal services have resumed. Communal violence over the amended citizenship law escalated in Northeast Delhi on Tuesday as police struggled to check the rioters who ran amok on streets, burning and looting shops. After overnight incidents of arson, tension smouldered in the national capital.

12 : 20 : Army won’t be called in, say govt sources

Government sources have told India Today that Army will not be called in the national capital. Enough paramilitary forces have been deployed in Delhi, the sources said.

12: 05 PM : Supreme Court pulls up Delhi Police over lack of professionalism

The Supreme Court on Wednesday pulled up the Delhi Police saying there was lack of professionalism. The SC said had the police acted in accordance with the law, many problems wouldn’t have taken place.

These things would not have happened had police not allowed instigators to get away, the Supreme Court said. Justice Joseph gave example of police in the US and UK, anbd said that force has to act professionally as per law if something goes wrong.

11: 25 : AM Delhi violence like a horror film depicting anti-Sikh riots: Shiv Sena

Observing that the violence in Delhi is akin to a “horror film” depicting the grim reality of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, the Shiv Sena on Wednesday said the “bloodbath” has brought disrepute to the national capital like never before while US President Donald Trump was in India with the “message of love”.

The editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ lamented that Trump was welcomed in Delhi while there was bloodbath on the streets.

11;22 AM : Flag march in Babarpur area of Delhi

Security personnel conducted flag march in Babarpur area on Wednesday. Earlier, flag march was conducted in Maujpur.

11: 04 AM Kejriwal demands Army deployment 

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said that the situation in northeast Delhi is alarming and the police have been unable to control the situation, despite all efforts. Kejriwal said the Army should be called in Delhi now and he will write to Home Minister Amit Shah regarding this.

“I have been in touch with large no of people the whole night. Situation alarming. Police, despite all its efforts, unable to control situation and instil confidence. Army shud be called in and curfew imposed in rest of affected areas immediately. I am writing to Hon’ble HM [Amit Shah] to this effect,” CM Arvind Kejriwal tweeted.

10: 15 AM  : Shop in Gokulpuri’s scrap market set on fire

A shop in the scrap market of Gokulpuri was set on fire on Wednesday morning. A fire tender has reached the spot.

3: 30 AM : Police used water canon on students 

A large crowd, mainly students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia  gathered outside CM Arvind Kejriwal’s residence  late last night, demanding action against the perpetrators of the violence. Delhi Police used water cannons and dispersed the crowd by 3:30 am.

1: 30 : 00 AM  :Midnight protests staged outside Kejriwal’s residence

Students of JNU and Alumni Association of Jamia Millia Islamia (AAJMI) and Jamia Coordination Committee organised a demonstration outside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence late on Tuesday night. People gathered outside the CM’s residence demanding action against Delhi violence and sought restoration of peace. Police disperse the people who had gathered outside Arvind Kejriwal’s residence who were demanding action to check Delhi violence.

1: 00 AM  : Delhi High Court notice to police over violence

The Delhi High Court, in a late-night order, asked the police to ensure safe passage and emergency treatment for those injured in the unprecedented violence in the capital since for the last three days. The hearing by a two-judge bench of the Delhi High Court took place at the residence of Justice S Murlidhar. The court was hearing an urgent petition seeking safe passage for the injured to medical institutions with adequate facilities. The court will take up the case again at 2:15 pm today.
